Mikhail Bulgakov in Bulgakov Residence

Bulgakov's Residence Boutique Hotel is a special place associated with the name of one of the most famous Russian writers of the 20th century. Mikhail Bulgakov visited here with Elena Shilovskaya (Bulgakova), the main lover of his life, who later became the prototype of Margarita. He met her nearby on February 28, 1929.

The artist Yevsey Moiseenko invited Bulgakov to pancakes in his apartment, which was located at 10 Bolshoi Gnezdnikovsky Lane. Elena Shilovskaya was also there, with whom Mikhail Bulgakov was next to the table. Together with a small company, the writer went to see Elena and her husband home. And she lived on the Patriarchs, on the corner of Bolshaya Sadovaya and Malaya Bronnaya, in an old mansion. The way there from Moiseenko's house lay past the Church of the Nativity in Palashi (destroyed in 1936). The church is famous: here in 1912 Marina Tsvetaeva married Sergei Efron. Bulgakov loved this church, which he considered special. And he loved a small house about 50 meters from this church, on the corner of Tryokhprudny and Bolshoi Palashevsky, where Bulgakov's acquaintances had a small workshop and a gallery in the basement. Now in this room there is a cafe of our hotel. It was there that Bulgakov suggested that Elena and her husband stop by on their way home. And it is in this house that the Bulgakov Residence boutique hotel is now located.

Here is how Elena Shilovskaya described the moment of meeting the writer: “We were sitting side by side, some strings on my sleeve were untied, I told him to tie me. And then he always assured that there was witchcraft, and then I tied him for life..."

Later, during a stormy romance, the writer and his lover repeatedly visited here. He was married, she was married, and emotional romantic encounters with friends close to Elena's home were an opportunity to spend time together. It was these days, full of torment, vivid emotions and love mysticism, that later formed the basis of Margarita's line in Bulgakov's most famous novel. And Elena Bulgakova became not only the writer's wife, but also his literary editor, the keeper of his heritage, carrying her love for him many decades after his departure. “I do everything in my power to ensure that not a single line written by him leaves, so that his extraordinary personality does not remain unknown. This is the purpose, the meaning of my life. I promised him a lot before I died, and I believe that I will fulfill everything,” she wrote in 1962.

We are proud that the walls of our hotel once witnessed the events associated with one of the best writers of the twentieth century. That is why we created Bulgakov's Residence, a boutique hotel in the heart of real Moscow.
